The Ultimate Guide to Services

What is Humane Society?

A group that’s main goal is to stop suffering of animals or humans as a result of abuse, cruelty or any similar reasons is called a humane society. In a number of different countries worldwide, this term is used mostly for preventing animal cruelty. In the UK, it might also be a society that is providing waterways rescue, recovery service or something that gives awards for saving human life.

The very first humane society in the US was the ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is founded in 1866 in New York City by Henry Bergh. A couple of years later, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded. As of the year 2012, Oregon Humane Society has adopted the biggest percentage of animals in the United States nationally with a save rate of 98 percent and adoption rate of 97 percent with roughly 11000 adoptions per year.

Humane societies that operate in the US are all independent of likewise named national organizations such as American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA or Humane Society of the United States or HSUS. While these local groups are mostly about adoption, proper sheltering and euthanasia of the animals, national organizations on the other hand are focused most on addressing and coordinating the much bigger problems that are beyond the scope or resources of independent smaller groups.

The truth is, Humane Society of the United States is not operating, funding or controlling local groups. On the other hand, what they do is support grants, standards of care, train animal care personnel and also, evaluation services. Apart from that, the HSUS are working often with shelters in big scale animal disaster and rescue operations, assist in transporting and caring of rescued animals, evaluation and triage. If you think that is all, the HSUS can also do national promotion of the animal shelter and adoption be it alone or by getting sponsorships of other like-kind charities.

Basically, there was a study made by Chronicle of Philanthropy back in 1994 focusing on the credibility and popularity of the non profit and charitable organizations. Out of the 100 non-profit charities in the US, it revealed that the Humane Society of the United States is on the 6th spot.

Some of the local humane society shelters are being referred as No Kill. This is frequently defined as a shelter to which the animals are just euthanized when they’re considered to be unadoptable either because it has behavioral problems that can’t be resolved or is suffering from untreatable medical condition.
